His seminar, entitled Fire-Safe Functional Porous Materials Based on Metal-Organic Frameworks, provided a detailed outlook on the past and recent developments in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the field of flame-retardant materials.

The Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering (BEEE) successfully held Teaching Research Salons – Series 4 on 23 June 2026 (Tuesday) in Room Z405, 4/F, Block Z.

This session featured a sharing by Ir Dr Yuen Anthony Chun Yin, recipient of the Departmental Teaching Award 2024/25. Prof. Yuen shared his insights and practical experience in teaching, offering colleagues valuable perspectives on effective pedagogical strategies and classroom practices.

The BEEE Industry Day 2026 has been successfully organised by Dr ACY YUEN. Firstly, congratulations to outstanding alumni award recipients Ir Brian Wai Lung CHENG and Prof Yuanhao WANG for their remarkable achievements. Also, big congrats to our PhD/MPhil and Final Year Project students for their hard work and poster designs, making this year one of the most highly competitive. Shout out to all awardees, and PhD candidate Tong LU and FYP student Yujie JIANG for scoring the grand Pioneer Award this year!

Congratulations to Dr Ivan Miguel De Cachinho Cordeiro for officially being awarded his PhD degree at the School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, UNSW Sydney, under the supervision by Prof GH Yeoh and Dr ACY Yuen. Dr De Cachinho Cordeiro is now continuing his research career at UNSW as a Postdoctoral Fellow, working on the development of advanced fire retardant materials.

Team members Dr ACY Yuen, Dr IM De Cachinho Cordeiro, Mr C Tian have participated and presented in the conference, for their new development of ReaxFF-MD works in fire safety and materials' applications.

AOFSM'6 Invited Keynote Speech & Team Presentations

We are pleased to share our latest work on catalytic plastic recycling, published in the journal Separation and Purification Technology (IF=9.0) by PhD candidate Chang Tian. This work aims to develop new insights into the effectiveness and reusability of zeolite-based catalysts on the pyrolitic polymer-fuel recycling process via the latest advancement in reactive molecular dynamics (ReaxFF-MD) techniques.

Zeonite Plastic Recycling

Working together with the Hong Kong Fire Services Department (HKFSD), Dr Anthony Chun Yin YUEN and his team will further develop the new Register Fire Engineer initiative. The new policy aims to streamline business operations by allowing registered fire engineers to conduct safety assessments, reducing processing time from up to 34 days to an average of 8 days. This initiative will be implemented on November 1, focusing initially on food-related establishments.

Dr Anthony Chun Yin YUEN delivered his invited HKIE Fire Symposium 2025 presentation on the topic "Advanced Technologies in Fire Modelling". He discussed the recent advancements in Molecular Dynamics models and the coupling with CFD techniques for upscaling fire simulations. Also, he shared his viewpoint on using AI-assisted MD/CFD models to aid in the design of battery thermal management systems for batteries.

Invited Speech

Bismuth (Bi) is a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its ultrahigh theoretical volumetric capacity. Team member. In our paper published in the Chemical Engineering Journal (IF=13.4), Dr Wenjie YANG reported an in-situ catalytic growth approach to synthesise Bi@GDY encapsulated within a graphdiyne (GDY) core-shell structure, promising anode material for SIBs.
